Bradford #thenorthunites Protest
Bradford protest 27th march 2021
Another week, another protest.
This weekend had around 1500 people gathered with around 500 marching through Bradford’s city centre to peacefully protest about the lockdown, vaccinations and the new police and crime bill.
There was an immense feeling felt from all, as hundreds chanted “freedom” as people delivered amazing speeches and talks.
We heard from https://www.instagram.com/northeastuniteforfreedom/ on Instagram that it was an “amazing, inspirational but crazy day for all those that attended… it was mostly peaceful and uplifting but you did need your running shoes… a lot of heavy-handed and unnecessary policing but everyone who came made it a historical experience.” They also added that you could really “feel the unity and the spirit of the people looking out for one another and showing the world that we have had enough of being lied to and controlled”
As the protest continued, more police patrolled the scene with police vans and horses following. From the videos we have attached, it is clearly seen how the police start to close in on certain spots of the protest which make it almost impossible for there not to be an incident. Despite this, many people chose not to retaliate and carry on peacefully protesting. However, the amount of police that circled the protest was very unnecessary and nerve-racking for many. Do you think the amount of police to this extent is needed?
It has been said that 13 people were arrested, 19 issued fines for breaching covid regulations and 9 police officers were injured. Many videos captured the police brutally, knocking and pinning down citizens which you can see is clearly hurting them but none of this is conveyed on any other news outlets. Police officers seem to not understand when they are crossing over the line of doing their job of protecting the people and actually hurting the people they are supposed to protect.
Once again, this protest was another unifying event. Many families with children were seen there, people with fantastic banners and many people clapping and cheering together, fighting for the same goal.
As for an update on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, it has currently been sent to a Public Bill Committee. This Committee will spend the next following weeks scrutinising the Bill line by line and is expected to report to the House by Thursday 24 June 2021.
